According to the latest assessment by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), giraffe populations have declined by an estimated 40% across Africa in the last 30 years.

That is why IFAW has teamed up with other wildlife conservation groups to petition the U.S. government to list the giraffe as Endangered on the U.S. Endangered Species Act (ESA). Listing the species on the ESA will help giraffes in Africa by ending the outsized role of the U.S. as an importer of giraffe skins, leather, bones and other parts and products.

Our petition was submitted in 2017 and finally reviewed in April 2019 by US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), which gave our petition a positive finding. This means that they have begun the process to determine if giraffes deserve ESA protections. The process to list species has become slower and slower over the years. Unfortunately, giraffes don’t have the luxury of time.

The good news is that in 2022, USFWS agreed to finalize a decision by November 2024. But we still need YOUR help to make sure they list giraffes under the ESA.

Giraffes are one of the most iconic and distinctive species in the world. Yet, according to the latest assessment conducted by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), giraffes have lost almost 40% of their populations in the last 30 years. With less than 100,000 animals left in the wild, there are now fewer giraffes than African elephants.

Giraffes are being depleted due to habitat loss and fragmentation, and poaching for bushmeat, bones and tail hair. In addition, giraffes are the subject of a significant amount of international trade in their bone carvings and trophies. The U.S. is guilty of being a substantial part of that trade. According to the petition to list them as Endangered under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) by the International Fund for Animal Welfare, Center for Biological Diversity, Humane Society International, and Natural Resources Defense Council, the U.S. imported more than 21,000 giraffe bone carvings, 3,000 skin pieces, and more than 3,700 hunting trophies in the ten-year time period from 2006 to 2015.

With giraffes being listed on Appendix II of CITES in August 2019, it is clear the world understands that trade in the species is a significant part of their tragic decline.

Giraffes need to be protected for future generations. Losing them would be a devastating loss to Earth’s biodiversity. In light of the rapid loss of giraffes in the last few decades and the continued presence of threats, I urge the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to list giraffes as Endangered under the ESA.
