It’s time to end Australia’s ivory trade. Take action today.

All three species of elephant and four out of five species of rhino are at risk of extinction. Tens of thousands of elephants and rhinos die each year because of poaching and trafficking which is driven, in part, by demand for ivory and rhino horn.

It's been six years since all state, territory and the federal government made a commitment to ban Australian domestic trade in ivory and rhino horn, but nothing has been done.

With every passing day that it is still legal to buy and sell ivory in Australia, more elephants are illegally poached to feed demand. This has to stop.

It’s time Australia joined other countries and followed through on its commitment to close its domestic ivory market. Can you help put the pressure on?

We need your help to ask state, territory and federal Environment Ministers to take the Ivory Pledge today.

The Ivory Pledge is asking state and territory governments to:

1. Give the Australian Government the power to enact national legislation that ensures a consistent and comprehensive ban on domestic trade in ivory and rhino horn across the country.

2. Develop legislation in our jurisdiction to support this ban, where necessary.

3. Work to deliver a comprehensive national domestic trade ban in ivory and rhino horn by next year’s World Elephant Day – 12 August 2025.

I am writing as one of the International Fund for Animal Welfare’s (IFAW) 412,000 Australian supporters to ask that your government takes the Ivory Pledge. All three elephant species and four of the five species of rhinoceros are at serious risk of extinction, and Australia can and must play our part in protecting these animals for the future!

A 2018 Federal parliamentary inquiry recommended the “Commonwealth, states and territories, through the Council of Australian Governments, develop and implement a national domestic trade ban on elephant ivory and rhinoceros horn”.

In 2019, all Australian jurisdictions committed to identifying appropriate mechanisms to eliminate domestic trade in ivory and rhino horn. It’s time to make this commitment a reality.

By taking the Ivory Pledge on behalf of your government you are committing to:

1.) Give the Australian Government the power to enact national legislation that ensures a consistent and comprehensive ban on domestic trade in ivory and rhino horn across the country.

2.) Develop legislation in our jurisdiction to support this ban, where necessary.

3.) Work to deliver a comprehensive national domestic trade ban in ivory and rhino horn by next year’s World Elephant Day – 12 August 2025.

While a strict ban is in place for international commercial trade in elephant ivory and rhino horn, a number of countries, including Australia, still allow an unregulated domestic trade. Domestic markets provide opportunities for trafficked ivory to find a market, stimulate and legitimise demand for ivory and rhino horn, and encourage the illegal killing to continue and pushing the species closer to extinction.

Just as we ask the global community to help us protect unique Australian wildlife, Australia has an important role to play in protecting elephants and rhinos by closing the domestic ivory and rhino horn trade. We know that 75% of Australians support such a ban.
