Pausing US foreign aid is having a direct impact on animals and people alike. It is critical that we call on our national leaders to restore America’s commitments to protecting wildlife and communities around the world. Uncertainty surrounding these essential federal funds jeopardizes ongoing law enforcement operations, makes communities living alongside wildlife more vulnerable, and increases the risk of diseases spreading from animals to humans.

IFAW works in partnership with federal agencies to protect keystone species including elephants, cheetahs, and iconic songbirds. Now, this critical, life-saving work is at risk.

The suspension of US foreign aid threatens to undermine the significant progress that wildlife experts and advocates around the world have achieved, as well as the credibility of our nation on the global stage. Accordingly, it is essential that we call on Congress to act in support of global conservation funding.

You have the power to make a difference. Send a letter to your elected officials urging them to reinforce US support for international conservation funding that benefits all of us just as it benefits animals and communities throughout the world.

As your constituent, I urge you to support restoration of US foreign assistance funds, which support wildlife, communities, and rule of law around the world.  
 
I am writing to voice my concerns about recent decisions to pause critical foreign assistance programs that combat wildlife trafficking, secure protected wildlife areas, support community livelihoods, prevent disease spread, and conserve keystone species that the American people hold dear.  I am particularly alarmed that innovative, effective trafficking prevention projects could be brought to a halt mid-implementation, as could wildlife security efforts across regions.

I ask that you and your colleagues act expeditiously to restore funding streams that support essential programming and grants. These funds, which are used to effectively and efficiently conserve wildlife and stop wildlife crime, are overseen by key federal agencies like the US Agency for International Development (USAID) and US State Department Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs.

Their resources are used to rein in illicit trade in animals and natural resources, which in turn helps to protect Americans in the US and abroad, promote the rule of law, and contribute to global security. Indeed, wildlife trafficking is the fourth most lucrative criminal enterprise worldwide with an estimated annual revenue of $20 billion, and those proceeds are often directed to a range of criminal activities that impact our national security interests. The US must restore our leadership to prevent dangerous criminal activities and protect ourselves.

It’s time to reinforce America’s role as a leader in global wildlife conservation, public health, and security. Please stand up for people and wildlife by calling on your members of Congress to support rapid and complete restoration of USAID resources and other international conservation funding.
