We just received alarming news that logging of Glenbog State Forest is scheduled to begin, leaving almost no time to prevent irreversible harm to this thriving ecosystem.

Countless native animals are now at risk of suffering a terrible—and entirely preventable—fate.

This rare “cloud” forest in southern New South Wales (NSW) is a critical wildlife haven. It supports more than 100 greater glider dens, over 900 wombat burrows, and provides refuge for other endangered species, including the gang-gang cockatoo. Every one of these animals depends on this forest to survive.

The Forestry Corporation of NSW plans to log Glenbog—putting every den and burrow at risk of destruction. Heavy machinery can collapse wombat burrows, potentially burying wombats alive, while the removal of large, old trees could destroy the nesting and shelter sites endangered wildlife rely on. Once these trees are cut down, they cannot be replaced in our lifetime.

The reason will shock you: This irreplaceable forest is being sacrificed to produce woodchips for overseas export, including paper and packaging. The cost is measured in lives—and many species will not recover.

This is a wildlife emergency. Logging must be stopped in Glenbog State Forest.

I am writing as one of the International Fund for Animal Welfare’s (IFAW) more than 440,000 Australian supporters to urge you to immediately cease all planned logging operations in Glenbog State Forest.

Glenbog State Forest is one of the last remaining strongholds for the nationally endangered greater glider and provides critical habitat for other threatened species, including yellow-bellied gliders and gang-gang cockatoos. These species rely on large, old trees and complex forest structure to survive—habitat that cannot be replaced for decades, if at all.

The forest is also home to a significant population of wombats. Logging operations risk collapsing or burying active burrows, trapping animals underground, and causing serious and avoidable welfare impacts.

Community-led surveys have already identified more than 100 greater glider den trees and over 900 wombat burrows within the forest. These findings raise serious concerns about whether the full ecological values of Glenbog State Forest have been adequately identified and assessed prior to logging approvals.

It should be clear that logging cannot feasibly occur in this forest without the destruction of critical threatened species habitat. Proceeding with operations places wildlife at unacceptable risk and undermines the protection these species urgently require.

I urge Forestry Corporation of NSW to remove Glenbog State Forest from the logging schedule immediately and ensure this important wildlife refuge is protected.
