Protections for endangered animals are being stripped away for short-term profit.

Federal agencies have severely weakened long-standing protections under the Endangered Species Act, making it easier for the habitat imperiled animals rely on to be destroyed.

This matters in a big way: habitat loss is one of the leading causes of species decline. When animals lose the places they need to feed, breed, and raise their young, their chances of survival become increasingly slim.

To combat this attack on our nation’s iconic species, forward-thinking leaders in Congress have introduced the bipartisan Safeguarding Endangered Species Act (H.R. 9901) to nullify this destructive rule and preserve the science-based principle that protecting at-risk species requires protecting their habitats.

As your constituent, I urge you to support the bipartisan Safeguarding Endangered Species Act (H.R. 9901) to protect threatened and endangered species from extinction. H.R. 9901 would nullify a recently finalized rulethat rescinds the long-standing, science-based definition of “harm” under the Endangered Species Act (ESA).

Since being enacted in 1973, the ESA has prevented the extinction of over 99% of listed species, in part due to its longstanding regulatory definition of "harm," which recognized significant habitat modification or degradation as a form of harm when it results in the death or injury of protected wildlife. The top cause of species decline is habitat loss and degradation -- the recission of the definition of “harm” goes against the science-based principle that protecting at-risk species requires protecting their habitats.

The ESA receives overwhelming public support from the American people across regions and parties. Recent national polling found that 78% of Americans support the goals of the ESA, 69% support protecting habitat where endangered species live, and 84% believe the US should focus on preventing endangered species from becoming extinct. When it comes to protecting our iconic wildlife, the Safeguarding Endangered Species Act (H.R. 9901) is consistent with Americans’ values.

Please stand up for our most imperiled wildlife and the places they need to survive by supporting H.R. 9901.
