In March of 2024, the government of Canada finally banned the use of strychnine, saving the lives of hundreds of wild animals from dying a painful, prolonged and torturous death by poisoning.
However, Compound 1080, another indiscriminate poison, remains legal for use, and in Alberta it is still permitted for use on coyotes. Compound 1080 is an extremely toxic, non-selective chemical that, like strychnine, kills many non-target species and travels down the food chain.
Animals who consume Compound 1080 baits experience extreme anxiety, frenzied behavior, seizures, vomiting, before succumbing to death from cardiac failure or respiratory arrest. Poisoned animals can suffer for hours before dying.
In addition, there are now active efforts underway in Alberta to attempt to reverse the federal ban on strychnine.
You can help protect wildlife by reminding the Government of Canada of the dangers of poison and urging them to keep the ban on strychnine in place and permanently cancel the registration of all products containing Compound 1080.
There is no question about it: a prolonged and painful death by poison is inhumane. There is sufficient scientific evidence to end the ineffective, unnecessary, and cruel use of these lethal substances.
Please send a message to the Government of Canada, urging the federal and provincial governments to work together to put an end to the cruel and unnecessary poisoning of wild animals and promote more effective and humane ways to coexist with wildlife.
