Lendlease’s controversial mega-development in south-west Sydney has been approved by Campbelltown Council and seems to be going ahead. We must take immediate action to protect our iconic koalas.

The survival of Campbelltown’s koalas relies on Lendlease to ensure they include a crucial 250m addition to the Menangle Creek link between the Georges River Koala colony and the bushland to the west along the Nepean River, as advised by the NSW Chief Scientist to the Government. After submissions from the community, these additions were made a requirement by the Local Planning Panel (Condition 22A), however, Lendlease’s planning proposal ignores the advice and requirements.

Underpasses and overpasses along Appin Road; a road notorious for koala-car collisions, have also been recommended so koalas can avoid the risk of being hit, yet Transport for NSW are showing reluctance to approve these.

The Minister for Planning now has the final say on what happens with this development and the Environment Minister can also apply pressure to ensure a preferable outcome for these koalas and other wildlife in the area. It is essential that provisions are put in place to ensure the future survival of the Campbelltown koalas; one of the healthiest colonies in the state, before it’s too late.

After the catastrophic Black Summer bushfires, land clearing and encroachment onto their territory, NSW koalas are at risk of extinction by 2050.

The Menangle Creek Koala Corridor is home to some of the healthiest koalas in NSW, and the only growing koala colony in the state, and they deserves protection.

Lendlease have submitted a new planning proposal for Stage 1 of the Gilead housing development, but they have ignored the advice of the Chief Scientist and Engineer and have deliberately omitted the crucial 250m addition, which is required by the Local Planning Panel after submissions from the community.

Lendlease are pushing to change the zoning in the area to allow for more intensive development – prioritising their interests above ensuring the protection of this essential Koala Corridor that is necessary to maintaining a viable koala population.

A key recommendation of the Chief Scientist was the construction of wildlife underpasses along Appin Road at Noorumba Reserve and Beulah, connecting to viable corridors. Transport for NSW must be required to ensure that these koala underpass crossings are built before any further development takes place.

Many koalas have already lost their lives to car collisions along Appin Road and this latest development will increase traffic volumes and put koalas at even more risk as they move between the fragmented koala habitat.

It is crucial that you act immediately to protect this iconic, vulnerable species. Koala populations in NSW are at severe risk – please act now and help save this critical population!
